The NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety is the flagship NEBOSH qualification, and is the first UK vocational qualification to be developed specifically for health and safety professionals. Since its introduction in 1988 it has become established as the most popular qualification of its kind, with over 10,000 students having successfully gained the NEBOSH Diploma.
The NEBOSH National Diploma provides the core health and safety knowledge (transferable across industry, commerce and the public sector) which, combined with understanding and appropriate application, underpins the competent performance of an occupational health and safety practitioner.Click Here for Dates and Prices
How is the NEBOSH Diploma Qualification Structured?
The NEBOSH Diploma qualification is divided into four units, each of which is assessed separately:
- Unit A: Managing health and safety
- Unit B: Hazardous agents in the workplace
- Unit C: Work equipment and workplace safety
- Unit D: Application of health and safety theory and practice
Exams and Assessment
Units A, B and C are each assessed by a 3 hour exam held on nationally set days in January and July each year. Whilst we are able to pay NEBOSH and call exams when we want for the Certificate-level qualifications, the Diploma exams must be taken at these specific times.
Unit D is assessed by an 8,000 word workplace-based project which is submitted to NEBOSH in March or September of each year.
You can take your exams together or spread them over a period, but to achieve the full NEBOSH Diploma qualification all units must be completed within 5 years of enrolment. We recommend exams are taken together following the course.
A Prestigious Qualification
Holders of the NEBOSH National Diploma may use the designatory letters "DipNEBOSH" after their name.
The NEBOSH National Diploma qualification meets the academic requirements to apply for Graduate Membership (Grad IOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). This is the first step to becoming a chartered health and safety practitioner as a Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH). It also accepted by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) as meeting the academic requirements for full membership (MIIRSM). The NEBOSH Diploma also provides a sound basis for progression to MSc level: A number of UK universities offer MSc programs that accept the NEBOSH National Diploma as a full or partial entry requirement.
Who Should Enrol on the NEBOSH Diploma?
A NEBOSH Diploma is the qualification for aspiring health and safety professionals, building directly upon the foundation of knowledge provided by the NEBOSH General Certificate. It is designed to provide students with the expertise required to undertake a career as a safety and health practitioner and also provides a sound basis for progression to postgraduate study.
There are no formal entry requirements for the NEBOSH National Diploma, however candidates should consider that this is professional level qualification, approximately equivalent to Level 6 (degree level). Achievement of the NEBOSH General Certificate or direct equivalent prior to undertaking this Diploma course is highly recommended.
The NEBOSH Diploma course will be delivered over 35 days in total, delivered in blocks of one week (a total of 7 weeks spread over 4 months). As well as the 35 tuition days, candidates should be aware there is a significant element of private self study required to successfully obtain a NEBOSH Diploma. NEBOSH estimate this to be 257 hours spread over the duration of the course; however this will vary from candidate to candidate depending on past experience and knowledge.
There is an optional 3 day revision module held at the completion of the course and prior to the exams, which can be booked either at the time of booking or at any time during your course.
On successful completion of the 3 exams and project you will receive an accredited NEBOSH qualification: the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. All exams are marked externally by NEBOSH appointed examiners.
To acknowledge the achievements of successful NEBOSH Diploma candidates, NEBOSH hold an annual graduation and awards ceremony. Eligible Diplomates will be invited to book a place at this prestigious event in April or shortly after your results are issued.
