NEBOSH National Diploma in
Environmental Management


The NEBOSH Environmental Diploma is intended for safety professionals and managers who are taking on environmental responsibilities. It is designed for individuals with responsibilities for the management of environmental risk in relation to the damage caused by work activities. The qualification will be invaluable for those aiming to develop and implement effective environmental management systems within their organisations.

Holders of the NEBOSH Environmental Diploma will be able to advise their organisation on the environmental impacts of their activities, on their legal obligations and the means of continuously improving their environmental performance as part of an integrated management approach.

Academic Benefits

Upon successful completion of the diploma, holders of this qualification may use the designatory letters EnvDipNEBOSH after their name.

IOSH CPD participants may allocate CPD credits for attendance on this course.

In addition, holders of the NEBOSH Environmental Diploma are eligible for Specialist Membership of IIRSM (SIIRSM).

Learning Outcomes

The syllabus of the NEBOSH Environmtental Diploma is wide and covers the following:

  • Managing emissions to the atmosphere

The National Diploma in Environmental Management is assessed in two units: ED1 and NDEM2. Both units are mandatory and there are no optional units. Students may choose to take the units together or at different times.

ED1 is a written examination lasting 3 hours and based on the taught syllabus above. This is marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH.

NDEM2 is a written assignment set by NEBOSH. The assignment should be approximately 8,000 words in total, excluding the references, bibliography and appendices. No penalty will be applied to reports over 8,000 words, however students are advised to keep the word count under 12,000.


On successful passing of the exam you will receive a NEBOSH national Diploma in Environmental Management.

Certificates are forwarded by NEBOSH approximately 16 weeks after the completion of the course although results are usually issued within 10 weeks.

As mentioned earlier, holders of this qualification may use the designatory letters EnvDipNEBOSH after their name. In addition, holders of the NEBOSH Environmental Diploma are eligible for Specialist Membership of IIRSM (SIIRSM).

Enhanced Learning Credits

Service personnel who qualify for Enhanced Learning Credits can use them towards enrolling on a NEBOSH Environmental Diploma qualification.
