Construction Work On Or Near a Road

Construction work on or close to a public highway is likely to mean that personnel are working next to moving traffic, which obviously presents a danger of being struck by a vehicle. A number of safety measures can be put into place to reduce the likelihood of an accident occurring, including the introduction of temporary speed restrictions, clear signs so that drivers are aware of changes to the road layout, and good quality lighting to enable drivers to see where they need to go. Workers should always wear high visibility jackets/vests which make it much easier for them to be seen.

The public too can be injured or killed by construction work in or by a road. Perhaps the most likely is falling down a hole created by the works, which can often be many feet deep. Whilst the work should always be enclosed by fencing or barriers to prevent members of the public inadvertently wandering in, this risk is increased significantly when it is dark. This makes fencing especially important at night and when no workers are on site, as it is more difficult at this time to see that there is a hole there. There is also a risk of trips and falls from raised, incomplete paving or tools/equipment left on the ground.

Depending upon the work being carried out, other precautions may be necessary to protect the public. For example, drilling or similar activities may produce flying debris which could strike somebody walking nearby.

Construction Health and Safety Courses:

  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate
  • SMSTS Refresher
  • Need an Accredited Course?

Along with designing bespoke health and safety training programmes, we also run the accredited NEBOSH, IOSH and ConstructionSkills (CSkills) health and safety courses as open courses at selected venues across the UK, as well as in-house for those companies who have a number of employees requiring the training, as it will be much more cost effective than sending them all onto a scheduled open course.

For more information please call 0115 984 9940 to discuss the options or send us an online contact form. Alternatively, use the "Courses" menu at the top of the page to view the courses and qualifications for the various awarding bodies.
