About Health and Safety NVQs

City and Guilds NVQ Level 3 in Health and Safety

A National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) is a qualification that recognises the competence of a person in a work situation.

Unlike traditional health and safety training qualifications that rely on teaching and examinations, a health and safety NVQ uses performance on-the-job as a basis for the assessment.

Who is the NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice intended for?

The Level 3 NVQ in Occupational Health and Safety is intended for those whose job role encompasses the area of general health and safety practice, and is suitable for those new to a health and safety role, or mangers who wish to formalise their knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace. All such health and safety practitioners are involved in risk assessment, the identification of hazards and determining strategies for control. There are a number of skills that they would all need and use, such as:

  • Raising awareness about health and safety within the organisation
  • Using information to promote good health and safety practice
  • Promoting good relationships to enhance health and safety practice
  • Maintaining and enhancing health and safety systems

  • As the NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is work-based, and involves the collection of evidence from your normal day-to-day activities, candidates must be in a job role that allows them to collect and provide this. This will probably be individuals who have already acquired some experience, and candidates must be in a health and safety managerial position, where they are able to influence the policy and practice of their organisation.

NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice Programme Structure

There are five mandatory units to the NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice:

  • HSS3 - Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
  • HSS4 - Promote a health and safety culture within the workplace
  • HSS6 - Conduct a health and safety assessment of a workplace

  • HSS7 - Make sure your own actions within the workplace aim to protect the environment
  • HSS8 - Review health and safety procedures in workplaces
  • HSS9 - Supervise the health, safety and welfare of a learner in the workplace

  • Entry requirements for the NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice

There are no formal entry requirements for the NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice; however candidates must be in a role that allows them to collect evidence which meets the requirements of City & Guilds.

We also need written confirmation (on company letterhead) from your employer giving permission for you to use company documents for educational purposes only, in accordance with the Data Protection Act.

Entry dates are flexible, and you can enrol on the programme at any point in the year. Contact with your advisor/assessor will be flexible via e-mail, telephone, video conference or at open days scheduled throughout the year. This is principally a distance learning type approach with no need to attend specific dates, making it ideal for those who need to fit their studies around their working hours.

The NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is a highly flexible programme and can be completed in a time period to suit candidates. Normally this will be around six months but really depends upon the amount of time each candidate can contribute. As a minimum time period, certification cannot be claimed until at least ten weeks after registration.

Upon completion of the NVQ requirements, candidates will be awarded an official City and Guilds accredited NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice. A separate certificate will detail all individual units completed as part of the overall health and safety NVQ programme.
