NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice

About Health and Safety NVQs

A National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) is a qualification that recognises the competence of a person in a work situation. Unlike traditional health and safety training qualifications that rely on teaching and examinations, a health and safety NVQ uses performance on-the-job as a basis for the assessment.

Who is the NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice intended for?

The Level 3 NVQ in Occupational Health and Safety is intended for those whose job role encompasses the area of general health and safety practice, and is suitable for those new to a health and safety role, or mangers who wish to formalise their knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace. All such health and safety practitioners are involved in risk assessment, the identification of hazards and determining strategies for control. There are a number of skills that they would all need and use, such as:

  • Raising awareness about health and safety within the organisation
  • Using information to promote good health and safety practice
  • Promoting good relationships to enhance health and safety practice
  • Maintaining and enhancing health and safety systems

  • As the NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is work-based, and involves the collection of evidence from your normal day-to-day activities, candidates must be in a job role that allows them to collect and provide this. This will probably be individuals who have already acquired some experience, and candidates must be in a health and safety managerial position, where they are able to influence the policy and practice of their organisation.
