About Health and Safety NVQs

City and Guilds NVQ Level 5 in Health and Safety

A National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) is a qualification that recognises the competence of a person in a work situation.

Unlike traditional health and safety training qualifications that rely on teaching and examinations, a health and safety NVQ uses performance on-the-job as a basis for the assessment, meaning that a person can achieve the qualification with minimal disruption to their workplace commitments.

Who is the NVQ Diploma Level 5 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice intended for?

The NVQ Diploma Level 5 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is specifically intended for people who are actively involved in the practice or management of health and safety as part of their job role. The Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) accepts this qualification for membership at Graduate level (GradIOSH), and upon completion of their Initial Professional Development (IPD) programme, candidates can achieve Chartered level membership (CMIOSH). The International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) accept this qualification for full Member status (MIIRSM).

This health and safety qualification has been accredited on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) at Level 5 and is worth 108 credits. Many universities will accept this qualification as suitable entry requirements for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate study in health and safety.

As the NVQ Diploma Level 5 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is work-based, and involves the collection of evidence from your normal day-to-day activities, candidates must be in a job role that allows them to collect and provide this. This will probably be individuals who have already acquired some experience, and candidates must be in a health and safety managerial position, where they are able to influence the policy and practice of their organisation.

Entry dates are flexible, and you can enrol on the programme at any point in the year. Contact with your advisor/assessor will be flexible via e-mail, telephone, video conference or at open days scheduled throughout the year.
